Married in to the Army, Amy Williams MBE, certainly understands Service life. But the gold winning Skeleton rider, from the Vancouver Olympics recalled her time training with the Army sled teams in Lillehammer at the very start of her career. Amy was talking to the UK Armed Forces Rugby Union Women’s XV prior to their match this evening against Cardiff Blues Wales Select XV and before presenting the team with their Remembrance Match shirts.
Amy struct an accord with the players who understand the dedication Amy had to show in the early years as she balanced her sporting aspirations with her job. For her part, having waiting for the return of loved ones from Operational Deployments, Amy felt she had some insight in to the unique pressures those who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice are under.
On completion of the shirt presentation the team were given a private tour of the Millennium Stadium, courtesy of the Welsh Rugby Union before preparing for the Remembrance Match this evening. Last season they suffered a narrow 17-12 loss and Jane Leonard’s team are determined to record a win this evening and will have been inspired by Amy Williams’ words.
